(SSRN - Elsevier, 2023) Chandrappa; Vasantha Raju, Narayanaswamy.; Harinarayana, N. S.
Higher education is increasingly becoming a global business. The main factor to distinguish between different universities in university ranking. There are numerous university ranking systems that include a number of citations as one of the measuring indicators. The rest of the journey is dependent on disseminating the publications via proper utilization of the “Research Tools”. Proper tools allow the researchers to increase their research impact and visibility. This study provides information about various activities such as learning management system, NPTEL, IRINS, Google Scholar Profile, ResearchGate, Web of Science, Shodh-Chakra, Digital Repository, e-Library Platform, Plagiarism tools and their adaptations in the Indian Maritime University, Chennai. Academic libraries play a key role in accelerating an institution's academic output and are underrepresented by many accreditation/ranking frameworks. This study aims to educate LIS professionals in preparing for the accreditation and ranking process

What constitutes cataloguing quality? A review of issues and perceptions
(ILIS Journal of Librarianship and Informatics, 2018-02) Chandrappa; Harinarayana, N. S.
Adherence to the quality in cataloguing has been the concern of catalogues for decades. This paper reviews various perceptions on issues related to cataloguing quality, which in reality vary among cataloguers. Cataloguing standards acts as guidelines for creation of catalogue records and as benchmark for evaluation of them. Creation of error free catalogue records is of paramount importance. However, accuracy alone cannot assure the quality, but the cataloguers need to understand the purpose of cataloguing the documents in hand. The cataloguing quality refers both to descriptive and subject cataloguing. Quality maintenance is a culture and need to be instilled through rigorous training.

Use of MARC21 control field data in University Library OPACs in Karnataka: A study
(Annals of Library and Information Studies, 2021-03) Chandrappa; Raju N, Vasantha.; Harinarayana, N. S.
This study discusses about importance of MARC21 control field and its effective implementation in university libraries OPACs in Karnataka. The catalogue records available through library web OPACs of universities under study formed the data source for this study. The university library web OPACs which we examined in this study have used Koha ILMS. One thousand and eighty-eight (1088) records were randomly selected from the nine university library web OPACs for the study. The study examined the proper implementation of 008 control field of MARC21, which is an important data element in information retrieval. The study found that average length of a cataloguing record was 1572.78 characters. The study as also revealed that libraries web OPACs under study have given scant attention for control fields, 001 and 003 were the two tag numbers that have been used extensively. Overall the university libraries have neglected control fields data element in their OPACs. This adversely affect the data retrieval from the user point of view. The study strongly recommend that libraries should fill up the data required for control fields while cataloguing their records.

Quality of catalogue records of university libraries in karnataka: A study
(GYANKOSH: The Journal of Library and Information Management, 2018) Chandrappa; Harinarayana, N. S.
Quality is the prime concern in every field. Quality in catalogue records refers mainly to the accuracy, comprehensiveness and adherence to standards. 52 common catalogue records of Mysore University Library (MUL) Bangalore University Library (BUL) and Gulbarga University Library (GUL) were tested for the cataloguing quality. The records were tested for their deficiency in their contents, inconsistency errors, and typos of editing & input. The findings show that the percentage of error rate in BUL is higher than GUL and MUL. The study showed the ratio of error rates to be 3.5:6:7 (MUL: GUL: BUL).

Next generation catalogues: A comparative analysis of OPACs of university libraries in India
(JLD: Journal of Library Development, 2017-01) Chandrappa; Sunil M. V.
The Next Generation Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), generally termed as OPAC 2.0, is the results of continuous rethinking and reworking to make the information retrieval more effective, efficient and elegant with improved searching experiences. This paper attempts to list the OPAC functionalities by studying the OPAC 2.0 features available in representatives of all three types of software – commercial, open source and free. This paper attempts to compare the features available in the OPAC of ten universities against the listed expectations. Effort is also made to understand the level of OPAC 2.0 in the software adopted by these universities for integration of e-Resources, and interoperability standards. Keywords: OPAC, Information Retrieval, OPAC 2.0., Library Automation, Online Catalogue.

Investigation into diligence in metadata records of mysore university library
(DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology, 2016-11) Chandrappa; Harinarayana, N. S.
in the metadata hamper the retrieval of bibliographic records. The present study attempts to investigate the error rate found in the metadata records of the Mysore University Library (MUL). The MUL is one of the oldest university libraries in the country, India. The study selected and analysed the accuracy of 624 metadata records of the Mysore University Library along with 491 records of Library of Congress (LoC). The assessment of the selected records discerned two main types of errors notably: Major and minor errors. These findings illustrate and prove that the percentage of error rate in MUL is higher than that of LoC. Consequently, the study highlighted that the prevailing error ratio between both institutions reaches almost up to 5:1 (MUL: LoC).

An examination of the quality of catalogue records of management institutes in india
(SRELS Journal of Information Management, 2018-04) Chandrappa; Harinarayana, N. S.
The purpose of this study is to examine the quality of catalogue records in the top five management institutes in India. The present study attempts to investigate the error rate found in the catalogue records of five management institutes by comparing with bibliographic records of Library of Congress (LoC). The study analysed the accuracy of 293 catalogue records. The errors in the data were listed and categorised as major and minor errors. The finding shows that while LoC records are absolutely error free, the quality of catalogue records of management institutes, on the other hand, was far from acceptable level. 1093 errors from 251 records were found amounting to 4.35 errors per record. These results show that there is a need for libraries in India to take up the bibliographic data entry more seriously than ever before.
