Abstract
This research aims to assess the intermodal connectivity and container movement efficiency of Chennai Port Authority (CPA), a vital sea gateway on India's eastern seacoast. Known for its mixed cargo handling portfolio consisting of automobiles, containers, coal, and oil products, Chennai Port is an important carrier of international trade, especially for southern Indian states. This research investigates the extent to which the port is integrated with inland transport networks—road, rail, and coastal shipping—and examines the challenges hindering efficient container transfer from the port to the hinterland. One of the central goals of the study is to evaluate CPA's intermodal container transport supporting infrastructure, operations, and coordination mechanisms. Container handling, transfer, and movement efficiency are included in the analysis, with a focus on issues such as congestion, last-mile connectivity problems, insufficient rail and road infrastructure, and policy fragmentations. Even after modernization and the establishment of specialized terminals, there are still major intermodal connectivity issues in Chennai Port.
